A metal sculptor and artist who explores ‘death and prayer’, ‘regeneration’ and ‘the cycle of life and death’ through her unique metal casting technique known as ‘Hana-ikomi’. Born in Kagoshima, she was deeply influenced by the overwhelming vitality and cyclical nature of the natural world. She completed her doctoral studies at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, graduating at the top of her class and obtaining a PhD in Fine Arts.
‘Hana-ikomi’, a technique established after approximately 12 years of research, is a patented method unrivalled anywhere in the world. It uses actual fresh flowers as moulds and, through a state-of-the-art vacuum pressure casting process, transforms them into metal of an extremely thin gauge—just 0.1 mm. The idea of ‘regeneration’ is embodied in the way the ephemeral fresh flowers are lost to fire and, through a gruelling process, are reborn as robust metal; the casting process itself serves as a kind of ritual prayer, constructing the meaning of the works.
In her representative series—*Flower Funeral*, *Sora-ka* and *Re:*—she visualises the primal act of offering flowers to the deceased and prayers rooted in reverence for nature. From the perspective that nature and humanity are inseparable, the works beautifully and quietly explore the cycle of life and the hope required to live beyond death and despair. In addition to having her work acquired by the National Museum of Crafts in 2025, she is actively pursuing her career both domestically and internationally, with her work gaining recognition at overseas auctions and being exhibited at official satellite exhibitions of the Venice Biennale.
