1981年石川県生まれ、2006年東京藝術大学美術学部絵画科油画専攻卒業。同年より、1879年創業の九谷焼窯元である上出長右衛門窯の後継者として、職人と共に多くの企画や様々な作品を制作、伝統の枠に囚われない柔軟な発想で九谷焼を現代に伝える。一方で美術家として磁器を素材に「甘蕉」、「B-P-F」、「瓷板画」などを発表。近年は画家として平面作品を多く手がけている。

「私は工芸が持つ確かな物質性と、非物質的な物語性の共存を主題としている。

自身のルーツである絵付磁器の技法や歴史を引き受け、土地に刻まれた記憶と文化を、神話をなぞるように批評的な視線で読み替えながら、工芸と芸術、絵画の領域を往還する実践を続けている。私の作品は型や様式、技術としてではない、工芸が持つ身体性とイメージが生まれる地点に立ち、その背後に流れる時間や物語を可視化し、現代における芸術表現の可能性を再考しようとする試みである。」

Born in Ishikawa Prefecture in 1981, he graduated from the Department of Painting (specialising in oil painting) at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, in 2006. Since that same year, as the successor to the Kamide Chōemon Kiln—a Kutani ware kiln founded in 1879—he has collaborated with artisans to produce numerous projects and a wide variety of works, conveying the essence of Kutani ware to the modern era through flexible thinking that transcends the confines of tradition. Meanwhile, as a visual artist, he has presented works such as ‘Amashō’, ‘B-P-F’ and ‘Porcelain Panel Paintings’ using porcelain as his medium. In recent years, he has been producing a large number of two-dimensional works as a painter.

My work explores the coexistence of the tangible materiality of craft and its intangible narrative quality.

Embracing the techniques and history of painted porcelain—which form my roots—I continue a practice that traverses the realms of craft, art and painting, whilst reinterpreting the memories and culture inscribed in the land through a critical lens, much like tracing the contours of mythology. My work does not focus on form, style or technique; rather, it stands at the point where the physicality and imagery inherent in craft emerge, seeking to visualise the time and narratives that flow beneath the surface, and to re-examine the possibilities of artistic expression in the contemporary world.
