神谷徹はカラーフィールドペインティングの形式を参照し、色に備わる表現力と主体性を自身の作品の主題に据えて、絵画の存在論と今日において絵を描くことの意味を再考します。これまで静物や風景、装飾的なモチーフをたびたび織り交ぜながら抽象と具象を往来してきたその実践は、絵画の定義を検証して押し広げるように発展を遂げてきました。ユニット式のインスタレーションからスケールの大きなキャンバスまで、作家による最新作の数々は、作品やそれに向き合う私たちを包み込む環境に沈潜し対話するよう誘います。

1969年愛知県生まれ。京都を拠点に活動。
1994年東京藝術大学大学院美術研究科絵画専攻油画修了。
同年アイルランド政府奨学生としてアート＆デザイン国立大学留学。
1999年ダブリンのTemple Bar Gallery & Studiosにてアーティストインレジデンス。
2011年文化庁在外研修員制度でロンドン芸術大学客員研究員。
2003年京都造形大学准教授就任、2023年より同大学教授。

Rethinking the ontology of painting and what it means to paint today, Toru Kamiya draws on formal traditions of color field painting to investigate the expressive capacity and agency of color as the primary subject in itself of his work. Oscillating between abstraction and figuration with occasional appearances of still life, landscape, and decorative motifs, Kamiya’s practice has evolved to examine and push the boundaries of painting. From modular installations to large-scale canvases, the artist’s latest body of work beckons viewers to engage in an immersive dialogue with the environment that encompasses themselves and the painting, giving rise to emotive and meditative experiences.

Born in 1969 in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, Kamiya lives and works in Kyoto. He received his MFA from the Tokyo University of the Arts.He studied abroad at the National College of Art & Design in Dublin as a recipient of the Irish Government Scholarship in 1994. He was an Artist-in-Residence at Temple Bar Gallery & Studios in Dublin in 1999, and was a Visiting Researcher of the TrAIN Research Centre at the University of the Arts London in 2011. He has been a Professor since 2023 and previously served as an Associate Professor at the Kyoto University of the Arts.

Recent presentations include the solo exhibitions breath / behind shut eyes / tracing (SCAI THE BATHHOUSE, Tokyo, 2023), Modest Engagement (SCAI THE BATHHOUSE, Tokyo, 2016); and the group exhibitions Polyphony (ARARIO GALLERY, Shanghai, 2022), Waiting Room (Anteroom Naha, Okinawa), Let’s Open the Doors to Art (Fuchu Art Museum, Tokyo, 2020), among others.
Kamiya’s work is in the collections of Fuchu Art Museum, Tokyo; Kyoto University of the Arts, Kyoto; and Louis Vuitton Collection. He has produced numerous commissioned works including public art projects for Azabudai Hills, Tokyo; Toranomon Hills, Tokyo; Tokyo Midtown, Tokyo; and Kyushu Dental University, Fukuoka; and the book project HYPERGRAPHIA: The Writings of DAVID SYLVIAN 1980-2014.
