The first artwork that caught my eye was Dimension 0-6-5 by Ryoten Ogata. The piece depicts the rough waters of an ocean from a bird’s eye view, realistically capturing waves that appear as if they’re about to move at any moment. It represents the energy flow of waves. His other artworks included a video work that simulates waves based on numerical calculations, and a stunning karesansui (a Japanese rock garden, based on Zen philosophy) installation on a mirrored surface on the ground, which completely shifted the atmosphere of the space.

During the exhibition’s run, the artist staged a sand art performance. It was impressive in how Ogata visualized wave energy by positioning himself as the source of this energy and drawing ripple patterns in the sand.

The artist ARCHIVES presented an experimental work using AI, focusing on the theme of whether AI-generated art can be treated as art. The AI processes the artist’s commands to create the artwork. The result was a strange still-life painting that was devoid of human emotions and somewhat desolate. Was this artwork made by a human or by AI? The artwork served as a forecast for the future of AI.

SHUN NAKANO
SHUN NAKAO’s artwork blends manga and street art aesthetics. The artist uses manga-style screentones and spray paint, an essential tool for graffiti artists. The protagonist stands amid a landscape that casually blends multiple locations, rather than a view based in reality. Viewing the work, I felt as though I could hear some kind of music coming from it.

The next artwork that drew me in was by the artist Sangsun Bae, who uses threads as one of her motifs. She is a Korean artist who studied art in London and Kyoto, where she is now based. Bae mixes threads from Korea and Kyoto to create her works.

She associates the material with how an unborn baby is tied to the mother through an umbilical cord, and how even after the cord is cut, people live life in pursuit of the threads of connections with others. In other words, for Bae, the thread motif represents the connections between people, and this idea underlies her practice. Viewing the photographs in which many colorful threads are complexly intertwined, I felt as though human connections are never clear and straightforward, but, like these artworks, human relationships are so intricately interwoven that they cannot be disentangled. In addition to the photographs, the artist displayed the versatility of her artistic practice, presenting a work in which visitors enter an approximately three-meter-high white dome.
Bae also participated in a talk event with Riku Matsuzaki, an aizome (indigo dye) artist, and Madoka Hatano, director of OHARANO STUDIO GALLERY. The conversation was fascinating, revolving around topics such as reviving kyoai (Kyoto indigo), which was lost during the Taisho era.

Another highlight of this special exhibition was an interactive gallery tour led by Avi, who creates content videos under the series “Audible Museum.” It was very insightful to hear descriptions about the artwork through the influencer Avi’s unique sensibilities. Although art is meant to be freely viewed and experienced, I felt that this was another way to enjoy the works, listening to another person’s perspective in a gallery tour.

Lastly, I made my way to the artists’ merchandise section, which sold many items quite distinct from the usual products available at museum gift shops. I spent a long time at this section alone, observing each thing: self-produced objects by the artists, products made by a glass artist, items in which companies collaborated with lesser-known artists, and more. I wanted to buy a lot of what I saw.
