クワバラは、「受容」と「共感」を主題に、人との距離感や感情の投影を絵画によって探究するアーティストである。匿名性をもつ人型の図像を用い、鑑賞者が自身の感情を重ね合わせることで、作品との関係性が変化する表現を目指している。

クワバラが描くキャラクターは、人に限りなく近い存在でありながら特定の個人を想起させない造形が特徴的だ。鼻や耳といった個人差の強い要素を省略し、表情を無表情に保つことで、特定の感情を押し付けるのではなく、鑑賞者の感情を受け止める「受け皿」として機能する余白を画面上につくり出している。
また、穏やかな色彩のグラデーションと光の扱いによって、鑑賞者の内的感情の移ろいに寄り添う画面構成を行う。背景は物質性を排した光と色のみの空間として描かれ、図像との距離を極力弱めることで、静かに感情と向き合うための場を成立させている。
近年の展示「幽光」では、図像性を意図的に弱める試みを通して、現代社会における他者理解や心の拠り所としての絵画の可能性を提示した。クワバラの作品は、強く主張するのではなく、かすかな光のように鑑賞者の傍らに在り続ける存在である。

東京では、露出が少なく今回の機会からより多くの方にクワバラの作品をしるきっかけとなれば幸いです。

Kuwabara is an artist who explores the themes of “acceptance” and “empathy,” investigating emotional projection and the sense of distance between people through the medium of painting. By employing anonymous, humanoid figures, Kuwabara aims to create expressions where the viewer’s relationship with the artwork transforms as they project their own emotions onto the figures.

The characters Kuwabara depicts are characterized by a form that is intimately human, yet evokes no specific individual. By omitting features with strong personal distinctness, such as noses or ears, and maintaining a neutral expression, the artist creates a “void” on the canvas. These figures do not impose a particular emotion; instead, they function as a “vessel” to receive and hold the emotions of the viewer.

Through gentle color gradients and the careful treatment of light, the compositions align with the shifting inner feelings of the audience. The backgrounds are rendered as spaces consisting only of light and color, stripped of all materiality. By minimizing the distance between the figure and the space, the works establish a realm where one can quietly confront their own emotions.

In the recent exhibition “Yuko (Dim Light),” Kuwabara explored the intentional weakening of iconicity, presenting the potential of painting as a source of emotional refuge and a means of understanding others in contemporary society. Rather than making a loud assertion, Kuwabara’s works exist as a subtle presence, remaining beside the viewer like a faint, lingering light.

With few previous opportunities to show in Tokyo, we hope this occasion serves as an introduction for many to experience and discover Kuwabara’s work.
