日本とは、名もなき人々の営みが積み重なって現れた一つの形ではないだろうか。
テラダヒデジは、祭りや踊り、祈り、縁起物など、暮らしの中に受け継がれてきた民俗を題材に表現する。
作品に現れる黒い人物は名もなき民の象徴であり、衣服に記された文字は、それぞれの営みや誇りを映し出す。
日常に織り込まれた祈りや願い、その積層が形づくる「日本」の輪郭を、絵画によって探り続けている。

Could Japan be understood as a form that has emerged through the accumulation of the lives and practices of countless unnamed people?

Hideji Terada draws upon folk traditions passed down through everyday life—festivals, dances, prayers, auspicious objects, and other customs—as subjects for his paintings.

The black figures that appear in his works symbolize the nameless people who have carried these traditions through generations, while the words inscribed on their clothing reflect their individual ways of life and sense of pride.

Through painting, Terada continues to explore the contours of “Japan”—a form shaped by layers of prayers and wishes woven into the fabric of everyday life.
