1994年、滋賀県出身。現在は京都府に拠点を置く。2017年に京都市立芸術大学 美術学部美術科油画専攻を卒業後、2019年同大学の美術学部大学院美術研究科修士課程絵画専攻油画を修了。

風景に対時した時の知覚や体感を手がかりとして風景をキャンバスに描いている。それは必ずしも目の前にある風景や何かを見ながら描いているのではなく、風景を見る際、目の前の見ている範囲だけでなく、視界の外や背後にまで広がる風景を描いている。加納はその全方向的な広がりの感覚を絵にするべく、見えない部分まで感じさせるような空間をつくり出す。
制作過程においては、絵の要素が即興的に画面を織り成して空間が現れてくることの新鮮さをとどめた、「うつりかわっていくような奥行き感」のある絵を目指しており、その空間表現は、描く途中で絵に合わせ木枠を自作し、そこから画布を張って側面まで絵が続いていくようにすることや、キャンバスとネット状素材の併用、体質顔料の使用など、物としての絵のあり方からも探求している。
風景と対峙した時の感覚を持った絵の実現をめざしている。外で風景を見るとき、それは見ている範囲だけでなく視界の外や、見る者の背後にまで広がっている。その広がりの感覚を「サラウンド感」と呼んでおり、制作の起点になる概念となっている。制作過程の途中で自作の木枠に画布を張り、絵が側面まで続いていくようにするなど、物としてのあり方からも探求している。

Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1994, Asuka Kano is currently based in Kyoto Prefecture. She graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts with a BFA in Oil Painting in 2017, and completed her MFA in Oil Painting at the same university’s Graduate School of Art in 2019.

Kano paints landscapes on canvas based on her perceptions and physical sensations when confronting a landscape. She does not necessarily paint while looking at something or a landscape directly in front of her; instead, when viewing a landscape, she paints the scenery that expands not only within her field of vision but also outside of it and behind her. To translate this omnidirectional sense of expansion into a painting, Kano creates a space that evokes these invisible parts.

In her creative process, she aims for paintings with an “ever-shifting sense of depth” that retain the freshness of a space emerging through the improvisational weaving of pictorial elements on the surface. She explores this spatial expression also through the physical nature of the painting as an object: building custom wooden frames during the painting process to match the artwork, stretching the canvas over them so the painting continues onto the sides, combining canvas with net-like materials, and using extender pigments.

She aims to realize paintings that hold the sensation of confronting a landscape. When viewing a landscape outdoors, it expands not only within the visible range but also outside the field of vision and behind the viewer. She calls this sense of expansion a “surround feeling” (surround sensation), which serves as the starting concept for her creation. She also explores the painting’s existence as an object, such as by stretching canvas over self-made wooden frames midway through the production process so that the painting continues to the sides.
