ガラスは結晶構造を持たない『アモルファス(amorphous)』とされ、分子レベルでは液体にも固体にも分類されない希有な素材であり、熱によって液体となってかたちを変え、重力と遠心力の影響を受けて流動する。代表作である「pool」は大型の吹きガラス作品で、溶解炉で溶けた1200°Cを超えるガラスを巻き取り、息を吹き込むことで成形される。冷めて割れるまでの一瞬の間に3mを超え膨張する。絶えず流動し熱を発するガラスを前にすると受ける極めて原始的な感覚は、認知し難い生命力に対する畏怖の念と考える。

私はガラスという透明な流動体に生命の息吹を感じ、その内なる力を「吹く」という行為により解放する。息を抱えて膨張したガラスは胚となって生の気配を孕み、鑑賞者の知覚に深く語りかける。

Glass, a non-crystalline amorphous solid, is a scarce material that is not classified as a liquid or a solid at the molecular level. It is fluidified by heat and flows under the influence of gravity and centrifugal force.
My representative work “Pool” is formed by glass melted at 1200°C in a melting furnace, reeled and blown. It swells to over three meter in diameter for a fleeting second from being cooled to breaking. I think of the extremely primitive feeling I have in front of glass constantly flowing and casting heat with a sense of awe for life, which is difficult to recognize.

I feel the breath of life in glass, a transparent and fluid material, and release its inner power by “blowing” into it. Glass embracing breath and swelling has a hint of life like an embryo, and deeply enters the perception of those who view it.
