2018 女子美術大学 美術学科 立体アート専攻卒業
小学生の時、図工の授業で張り子のお面を制作したことをきっかけに、造形に興味を持つ。
高校では美術部へ入部し、彫刻部門で全国大会に出展。
女子美術大学では立体アートを専攻し、作品の表面を和紙で張り子の様に覆うことで、
柔らかな質感と温かみのある作品を数多く創出。卒業後も働きながら創作活動を続けている。

・「goro寝　-醒-」

生きるものをテーマに作品を制作している杉山。犬や猫などの動物を創作する上では、特に生命力を強く感じる「目」を中心に表情や構図を作り、樹脂や粘土を組み合わせ、最後は表面を手漉き和紙で張り子のように覆うことで、やわらかな質感を表現している。
見る人が実際に触れずとも、そこにいる動物の体温や息遣いを感じられるようなアートを追求。
本作は寝起きから急に覚醒したときの表情を表現している。

・「三毛縞と仙桃」

樹を植えれば邪鬼を払い、を食べればその神気を取り込み良い事が起きるとされている桃。３月の桃の節句で花を飾るのは子どもが良い御縁に恵まれるようにという祈りが込められている。猫が桃を抱えたこの作品は様々な“幸福”を“招き入れる”イメージ。

Department of Fine Arts, Major in Three-Dimensional Art
Her interest in art and sculpture began in elementary school after creating a papier-mâché mask in an art class. During high school, she joined the art club and exhibited sculptural works in a national competition.
At Joshibi University of Art and Design, she specialized in three-dimensional art, producing numerous works characterized by soft textures and warmth by covering their surfaces with handmade washi paper in a papier-mâché–like technique. After graduation, she has continued her artistic practice while working.

-Description-
Sugiyama creates works centered on living beings. When sculpting animals such as dogs and cats, she places particular emphasis on the eyes—where she feels the strongest sense of vitality—building expressions and compositions around them. By combining resin and clay and finally covering the surface with hand-made washi paper in a papier-mâché–like process, she achieves a soft, gentle texture.
Her work seeks to convey the warmth and breathing of the animals, allowing viewers to sense their presence even without touching them.
This piece captures the expression of an animal suddenly awakening from a state of rest.

Peaches have long been believed to ward off evil spirits when planted, and to bring good fortune by absorbing divine energy when eaten. In Japan, peach blossoms are displayed during the Peach Festival in March as a prayer for children to be blessed with good relationships and a fortunate future.
This work depicts a cat holding a peach, symbolizing the act of “inviting” various forms of happiness into one’s life.
The peach is detachable.
