【Profile】

Born in Fukuoka in 1986. Graduated from the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, specialising in sculpture, in 2011; studied under his father, Nobutaka Nakamura. Fourth-generation master of the Nakamura doll-making tradition.

【Statement】

Founded in 1917, Nakamura Ningyo has continued to craft Hakata dolls for over a century, guided by the philosophy that ‘dolls are the embodiment of people’s prayers’. As the fourth-generation successor, Hiromine Nakamura approaches his craft by upholding the traditional techniques and spirit of the family business.
After studying sculpture at the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School, he began apprenticing under his father, Nobutaka Nakamura, in 2011. He sets himself the hypothetical scenario: ‘What if a doll-maker from the Edo period were to time-travel to the present day?’, thereby exploring themes—such as prayer and heroism—that people continue to cherish across the ages.
The starting point for this was an attempt to superimpose the ‘prayers’ and ‘aspirations’ embodied in the May dolls, which pray for the healthy growth of children, onto the heroic image of modern athletes. The origin of this approach lies in the seasonal dolls he created for his two sons. Focusing on the fundamental similarities between the armour and helmets bearing family crests worn by samurai during the Sengoku and Edo periods and contemporary branded items, the fictional sports brand ‘FLOW (Furō)’ was born within his artistic universe.
At the same time, he continues to undertake commissions that are accessible to the public within the city and at festivals, such as the figures for the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, the zodiac figurines at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, statues at shrines and temples, and murals in hotel lobbies. In recent years, he has expanded his exhibition venues to London, New York, Venice and Cairo, and in 2026 he will participate in an official satellite exhibition of the Venice Biennale.
By bridging Edo-period doll-making techniques with contemporary sensibilities, she creates forms of prayer relevant to the present day through a diverse range of expressions, from traditional Hakata dolls to works of art.
