クワバラは、「受容」と「共感」を主題に、人との距離感や感情の投影を絵画によって探究するアーティストである。匿名性をもつ人型の図像を用い、鑑賞者が自身の感情を重ね合わせることで、作品との関係性が変化する表現を目指している。

クワバラが描くキャラクターは、人に限りなく近い存在でありながら特定の個人を想起させない造形が特徴的だ。鼻や耳といった個人差の強い要素を省略し、表情を無表情に保つことで、特定の感情を押し付けるのではなく、鑑賞者の感情を受け止める「受け皿」として機能する余白を画面上につくり出している。

また、穏やかな色彩のグラデーションと光の扱いによって、鑑賞者の内的感情の移ろいに寄り添う画面構成を行う。背景は物質性を排した光と色のみの空間として描かれ、図像との距離を極力弱めることで、静かに感情と向き合うための場を成立させている。

近年の展示「幽光」では、図像性を意図的に弱める試みを通して、現代社会における他者理解や心の拠り所としての絵画の可能性を提示した。クワバラの作品は、強く主張するのではなく、かすかな光のように鑑賞者の傍らに在り続ける存在である。

東京では、露出が少なく今回の機会からより多くの方にクワバラの作品をしるきっかけとなれば幸いです。

Kuwabara is an artist who explores themes of acceptance and empathy, examining through painting the emotional distances between people and the projection of inner feeling onto another. Working with anonymous, human-like figures, Kuwabara invites viewers to overlay their own emotional states onto the work — creating an encounter in which the relationship between viewer and image shifts and evolves.

The figures depicted occupy a space of deliberate ambiguity: unmistakably human in form, yet carefully divested of any particularity that might evoke a specific individual. Features associated with personal distinction — the nose, the ears — are elided, and the faces are held in a state of sustained neutrality. Rather than prescribing an emotion, this openness functions as a receptive ground, a pictorial space capable of holding whatever the viewer brings to it.

Kuwabara further orchestrates this attunement through softly modulated color gradients and a considered handling of light, constructing a pictorial surface that moves in sympathy with the viewer’s shifting inner states. Backgrounds are rendered as pure fields of light and color, stripped of material reference; by collapsing the sense of distance between ground and figure, the artist establishes a quiet arena in which emotion may be met face to face.

In a recent exhibition, Dim Light (幽光), Kuwabara pursued a deliberate attenuation of figuration itself — an inquiry into the possibility of painting as a site of empathy and inner refuge within contemporary society. Kuwabara’s works do not assert or demand; they persist, softly and without insistence, at the viewer’s side — present as a faint light.
