Born in Tokyo in 1985, she grew up in Kamakura. In 2010, she graduated from the Department of Crafts, specialising in Dyeing and Weaving, at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Whilst a student, she began researching traditional Japanese culture, particularly the costume culture of courtesans during the Edo period, and undertook the creation of Yuzen-dyed kimonos and geta.
Adopting ‘Rethink’ as the guiding concept for her creative practice, she reinterprets Japan’s ancient culture and traditional craft techniques from a contemporary perspective, thereby expressing the values of those of us living today. Her representative work, *Heel-less Shoes*, is a pair of heel-less shoes inspired by the high geta worn by oiran; it has gained international acclaim as a work that re-examines the relationship between the human body and aesthetic sensibility. Her works are held in the collections of museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Her practice transcends the boundaries between fashion and art, and in recent years she has expanded her creative scope to include painting in addition to sculpture. In 2016, she directed a performance of the Bunraku puppet theatre at the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris, and she is also active as a stage director. To date, she has exhibited her work at venues including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, the Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum and the Panasonic Shiodome Art Museum; since 2019, she has also served as a Specially Appointed Professor at the Japan University of Arts.
Furthermore, through collaboration with artisans across Japan, she continues to explore ways of integrating traditional craft techniques into contemporary art forms. She remains committed to exploring the new possibilities for expression that arise from transcending disciplinary boundaries.
