神谷徹は、カラーフィールド・ペインティングの形式を参照しながら、絵画の存在論や今日における絵を描くことの意味を再考する画家です。自作の刷毛でアクリル絵具を塗り広げるシリーズは筆跡のない着彩でありながら、画面中央へ向かう繊細なグラデーションによって独自の絵画空間を生み出しています。数字と色が結びつく共感覚者であり「できるだけ誰にでもできる手法を取りながら、誰にも出来ないようにする」「絵と場所、人との出会い」による場づくりに注心し制作を続けています。

スタジオの床に、絵具の滴りがすごい。
重力で地球の真中に引き寄せられ円を描いている。
まるで星がうまれるときに、丸く成るように。
「できるだけ誰にでもできる手法を取りながら、絵と場所、人との出会い」に注心し制作を続けている。
グラデーション／ストライプ／ドット。
特別なものが「なにもない」を作るのは結構大変で、思わせぶりになりがち。
シンプルに、できるだけ誰でもできるプロセスを選んで、それでいて自分にしかできない手法を目指す。
始まりもなく終わりもない、目で見ることを超えた領域に触れてみたい気持ちを頼りに。

Born in Aichi Prefecture
1992: Graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, specialising in oil painting

Toru Kamiya is a painter who, whilst drawing on the form of colour-field painting, re-examines the ontology of painting and the meaning of painting today. His series, in which he spreads acrylic paint using his own brushes, features colour application without brushstrokes, yet creates a unique pictorial space through delicate gradients converging towards the centre of the canvas. As a synesthete who associates numbers with colours, he continues to create works whilst focusing on ‘using techniques that anyone can do, yet making them impossible for anyone else to replicate’ and on ‘encounters between paintings, places and people’ to shape the artistic environment.

There are incredible drips of paint on the studio floor.
Drawn by gravity towards the centre of the Earth, they trace circles.
Just as stars take on a circular shape when they are born.
‘Whilst employing techniques that anyone can use, I continue to create with a focus on the encounter between the painting, the space and the viewer.’
Gradients / Stripes / Dots.
It is quite difficult to create ‘nothingness’ from something special; it tends to become overly suggestive.
I aim for a simple process that anyone can follow, whilst still pursuing a technique that only I can execute.
Guided by a desire to touch upon a realm beyond what the eye can see—a realm with neither beginning nor end.
