Because the human body is so strongly associated with social and cultural meanings—such as the hand clenching a fist or the head nodding—I tend to interpret the meaning before I even notice the form itself. On the other hand, whilst snakes and plants also have their own distinctive movements and patterns, they slither about in a realm somewhat removed from such meanings.
As I was thinking about this, I recalled my childhood.
When I was at primary school, there was a nature reserve in the school courtyard, and during break times I was the sort of child who would spend the whole time there looking at and touching the soil, insects and water.
Come to think of it, even at nursery school, I used to play in the mud after someone had sprinkled water on the sandpit. Small creatures are trustworthy. They say nothing and are constantly moving to escape from humans. Even if you catch them, they won’t grow fond of you, nor will you connect with them on an emotional level. Yet, for a brief moment, I loved observing them in my hand or in a bug cage.
Lush weeds and climbing plants spiralling upwards, with countless insects beneath them. I was moved by the rapid heartbeat of the slow worm wriggling in my hand.
The subject of Biology explained that world to me. Yet as the lessons progressed, the warm, somewhat fearsome lives right before my eyes were gradually replaced by diagrams and chemical equations.
Looking back now, I realise that ever since I was little, I simply wanted to understand the world; I certainly never wanted to organise it.
My method of painting—as if in dialogue with the canvas—doesn’t always go well; or rather, there’s no clear prospect of completion.
Even so, if I keep repeating the process of drawing and erasing, I eventually arrive at something resembling an answer.
I paint in search of that answer—something that cannot be understood, dissected or schematised, something like the underside of the earth.
